Technology Project in Lake Victoria Helps Save Lives

Feb 10, 2014 EST

According to Ericsson's recent mobility report, Sub-Saharan Africa is a land of opportunity for telecommunications. The region is one of the world's fastest growing mobile markets. One area where change is really visible is around the Lake Victoria region.

Ericsson employee David Muwanguzi who moved back after some time abroad is seeing the impact of technology in Uganda not only on the urban environment but also on rural life: an Ericsson project put in place to enable fishermen with an early warning storm alert system is saving lives in lake Victoria that sees as many as 5,000 fishermen perish each year.

David foresees this new technology frontier and the pace of development will set a pattern of transformation for the new generations. Technology will not just enhance business but help tackle major challenges around the lake: safety, health and education. For example, GPS and emergency response built into communications systems will enable the rescue of stricken passengers in a land where the journey to hospital could do the most damage.
