Mental Health in Somalia

Feb 21, 2014 EST

After more than two decades of civil war, Somalia is finally experiencing a relative period of peace. While homes and businesses can be rebuilt though, the country's psychological scars may take much longer to heal. According to one study conducted by the WHO, one in three people in Somalia suffers from some type of mental condition. Fighting this, almost single-handedly, is Dr. Habeeb, who has setup more than half a dozen centres in Somalia for the mentally ill since 2005. Here, not only can people suffering from the psychological traumas of war seek help, but Dr. Habeeb also campaigns tirelessly in order to change the public's perceptions about mental illness in general.
