Ericsson has announced its three inventors of the year for 2013. Two of them have been given the award for their work in media and one in wireless access networks. Together, the three have applied for 334 patents. The three winners are Fredrik Gunnarsson (Ericsson Research, Linköping, Sweden), Rickard Sjöberg (Ericsson Research, Kista, Sweden), and Thorsten Lohmar (Business Unit Support Solutions (BUSS), Herzogenrath, Germany).
Gunnarsson's work focuses on optimization and automation and relates mainly to radio resource management, self-organizing networks (SON) and heterogeneous networks. Rickard Sjöberg, expert in video compression, was awarded for his inventions related to media coding. He was drafted by Ericsson in 1997 after finalizing his master's thesis, and has been working in the video coding field ever since. Thorsten Lohmar, an expert in media delivery architecture, started at Ericsson in 1998 and moved to BUSS in 2013 after working for Ericsson Research in different organizations. Many of his inventions are also in the areas of media broadcasting technology for wireless networks and optimization techniques for video.
Ericsson has been recognizing talented innovators since 2003 through the Inventor of the Year Award. Each winner receives a diploma, a specially designed piece of art and Ericsson shares worth EUR 10,000.
